Dean had Lisa and Ben but why is everyone up in arms over Castiel? Maybe its because Castiel actually affects Dean, challenge him and help him grow as a person and isn’t just an accessory. Sam needs a Castiel, not another Lisa or Ruby to coddle them.

Precisely. No one blatantly bashed Lisa for being with Dean; their storyline was forced and not very interesting and even Jensen didn’t like it, it’s true, but no one ever reacted to her and Dean the way they do with Castiel and Dean as a potential pair. Why is that? I was talking about this with someone recently, who suggested that perhaps a vein of heteronormativity runs throughout parts of the fandom, despite all of the slash. It’s an interesting thought.

Sam definitely needs someone. I can’t see his storyline progressing anywhere else, really. He needs a human connection outside of his brother for him to continue to develop. They can’t force more supernatural issues on him. It would be redundant. It has been redundant. Maybe Sarah Blake is still single. ;)

(It’s more than just a vein of heteronormativity.  If Cas was a girl, they would have been banging and the fandom would have loved “her.”  Still, a lot of fans don’t like Cas because he changes the “two brothers asskicking” dynamic that the show always had.

The Winchester brothers will always be the core and heart of the show, but that doesn’t mean they have to be the only thing.  In fact, they shouldn’t be.  The show has grown way beyond season one, and I hate the fact that the writers seem to keep wanting to regress to that.)

This is interesting, indeed they didn’t complain that much when the “brothers” where separated kind of, by a woman (Ruby, Lisa, but also Cassie, Anna, Sarah…). Wasn’t it even super emotional with Madison and just made their brotherly link even stronger etc ? Those fans don’t complain when they are separated temporally like this.

But when it’s Castiel. Oh GOD. But why ? It IS temporally, Dean AND Sam are gonna stay BOTH the main characters till the end of the show, so what the hell is the problem with Castiel ?

I think it’s what you both said. Not only there are those who feel “threatened” by Dean and Castiel deep and complex relationship, but there are a lot of people who just don’t want Dean to have any kind of “profound bond” with another man who isn’t family. It’s either crazy and loud wincest/J2 fans, and plain homophobics. It’s just sad.

Especially because Team free Will could be SO much better. And because it’s just easy to see other shows that have 2 main characters but who are surrounded by a lot more characters WITHOUT it spoiling their screen time or whatever stupid arguments our dear assbutts come with.

In the other hand, I see all the time people saying that if Castiel had been a woman Destiel would have sailed long time ago. I do agree with the fact that the ship would have been SO much more accepted (by the crew/cast, the medias and the straight-only fans). But - sadly actually - if it hadn’t be for Misha Collins, they wouldn’t have kept the character. Not only because a woman angel would ha… oh well, just : ANNA. But also because Misha and Jensen DO have that incredible chemistry that equals the one he has with Jared. I think that the “good way” would have been to make Castiel get a woman vessel during season 5 or 6. But a majority of fans wouldn’t have liked it (ironically, a majority because the wincest fans and the minions would have been together on this one, suddenly “family”). Which is too bad in my opinion. They totally could have kept Misha as an other character (Jimmy, the Levi boss, anything, he is awesome enough to play everything perfectly). It could have been more realistic (because they would have had the TIME to bond, not like what happened with Anna again) and interesting as a relationship, would have thrown away all the sexual/gender conventions and just be freaking awesome, and Dean could have had his family with some badass person, strong/prepared enough to bear with him the difficulties of his life.

But oh well, too bad, too late now.

And Castiel isn’t a man. I’m tired of (and hurt by) both straight and gay people who aren’t acknowledging this fact. Please, why should it be about Dean being straight, bi or gay ? Why can he be just a human being who usually likes woman but who falls in love with a specific angel ?
